'Upadesha’ means teaching and ‘sara’ implies essence. The title thus indicates the essence of the teaching (of Vedanta). The crux of the four paths to Realisation – karma-yoga, bhakti-yoga, aṣṭāṅga-yoga and jñāna-yoga – is expounded upon by Sri Ramana Maharshi in thirty simple yet profound verses. Upadesha-sara is an essential text for gaining an overview of the spiritual path. Sri Ramana Maharshi's unique and direct method of Self-enquiry is the highlight of the text.
